Microchips will help monitor truants at school
Microchips will help monitor truants at school
26 03 2012
In Brazil, they began to sew computer chips into school uniforms to monitor the movement of students and thus reduce the number of absenteeism.

Microchips will be sewn into the school T-shirts of 20 thousand students of the city of Vitoria da Conquista, located in the state of Bahia in the east of the country.

Parents will receive SMS messages when their children enter school or if they are late for classes.

According to local officials, this will help improve the relationship between teachers and parents.

The authorities of the city of Vitoria da Conquista called T-shirts with microchips «smart school uniforms».

According to them, next year they will be worn by all local schoolchildren under the age of 14.

Chip on the sleeve

According to the director of the city’s education department, Coriolano Moraes, he decided on such a measure, since many families do not even suspect that their children are skipping school.

"We noticed that parents bring their children to school, but do not see that they have actually entered the building, because they are always in a hurry to get to work," Moraes said in an interview with the Associated Press agency.

Chips are placed on the sleeve or under the school symbol, which is sewn onto the uniform.

When a student passes through the sensors installed at the entrance to the school, the chip sends an SMS message to the parents.

If the child is late for class by more than 20 minutes, one of the family members receives a message with the second text: «Your child has not yet arrived at school.»

About 700,000 dollars have already been invested in the new parental notification system.

The authorities are confident that school T-shirts can be washed and ironed without damaging the microchips.
